Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild dental anxiolytic (anxiety reducing) medication that is inhaled with a mask through their nose. Once inhaled, it induces a state of mild relaxation. It also reduces sensitivity to pain. Nitrous oxide is safe for virtually every patient, regardless of age. Following treatment, oxygen is used to neutralize the effects of the nitrous oxide bringing your child back to their original state of alertness and awareness. Some children do experience some drowsiness after the use of nitrous oxide which does wear off.
If your child needs more complex treatment or has special needs, we can provide treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.
Your child’s safety is our top priority. At your appointment, be sure to tell us:
- Any prescription medications or over-the-counter medications they are taking
- Any herbal or nutritional supplements they are using
- Any allergies your child has, particularly medication reactions
- Any health conditions they have
- Any questions or concerns you may have about your child’s treatment or about sedation dentistry
